Mauricio Kagel è stato un compositore argentino-tedesco. Nato a Buenos Aires nel 1931, accanto alle sue lezioni di musica studiò letteratura con Borges. Si trasferì a Colonia nel 1957 e si guadagnò rapidamente la reputazione di umorista attraverso la sua musica – che spesso tocca il pastiche e l’assurdo. Molti dei suoi pezzi fanno girare la testa alle convenzioni stabilite dal canone classico.
A volte non si è sicuri se ridere o no, altre volte il pastiche è molto evidente (ascoltate la rivisitazione del canone Pachelbel…) Alcune opere sono più serie, con strani sovvertimenti che appaiono all’interno del loro tessuto.
Egli può forse essere meglio descritto come qualcuno che aveva un rapporto serio con l’umorismo in tutte le sue forme. Per questo la sua musica è un accompagnamento adatto ai testi letti da Alfred Brendel, questa sera.
Mauricio Kagel was an Argentine-German composer born in Buenos Aires in 1931, where he studied literature with Borges alongside his music classes. He moved to Cologne in 1957 and quickly gained a reputation as a humourist through his music which often deals with pastiche and the absurd. Many of his pieces turn established conventions of the classical canon on their heads.
At times one isn’t sure whether to laugh or not, at others the pastiche is very clear (listen out for a reimagining of the Pachelbel canon). Some works are more serious with strange subversions appearing within their fabric.
He can perhaps be best described as someone who had a serious relationship with humour in all its forms. In this way the music is a suitable accompaniment to the texts read by Alfred Brendel this evening.

Composto a Londra verso la fine del 1824, il Duetto è una delle poche opere di musica da camera eseguite regolarmente oggi. Si tratta di una composizione leggera e affascinante, ma richiede artisti esperti.
L’opera è stata spesso eseguita nel XIX secolo dal virtuoso del contrabbasso Domenico Dragonetti (chiamato ‘Il Drago’ o ‘Paganini’ del contrabbasso’) e sappiamo che Rossini conosceva e consultava Dragonetti su questioni relative allo strumento.
Composed in London near the end of 1824, the Duetto is one of the few chamber music works regularly performed today. It is a light and charming composition yet requires experienced performers.
The work was often performed in the 19th century by the double bass virtuoso Domenico Dragonetti (called ‘Il drago’ or ‘Paganini of the double bass’) and we know that Rossini was acquainted with and consulted Dragonetti on matters dealing with the instrument.
